/ Hussein Smko

Hussein Smko is a Kurdish dancer and choreographer. He choreographed in festivals and residencies, including the One Journey at the Kennedy Center, Battery Dance Festival, CUNY Dance Initiative, LPAC, Rough Draft, and the Chicago Cultural Center's Surviving the Long Wars. Notably, he danced with Pontus Lidberg’s On the Nature of Rabbit at the Joyce Theater (2024). Hussein acted and choreographed in plays like Iphigenia Point Blank and Outside. Collaborating with Or Schreibier in As It Ends It Begins, Hussein features in Dana Mills' book Dance and Activism. His work was critically acclaimed in New York Times, Dance Magazine, Dance Enthusiast, Wall Street Journal, and others. A film documentary The Performance, directed by Alfredo Chiarappa offers an in-depth look into his artistic journey. In 2019, Hussein founded Project/Tag, a dance theater company. He choreographed Rose in the Sand;Call for Prayers and is developing Sarah, to premiere in 2025.
